Fees

How Amazon calculates FBA fees

With Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), several fees apply to every unit sold. The calculator uses Amazon's published rates (as of October 31, 2026).

  • Referral fee

The referral fee is a percentage of the sale price. Most categories on amazon.com charge 8% to 15%, with a minimum of $0.30 per item. Some categories switch rates by price, such as clothing, baby products and jewelry. On amazon.de, Amazon applies the rate to the gross price including VAT.

  • Size tier

Amazon assigns every packaged unit a size tier by dimensions and weight alone. On amazon.com, a unit up to 15 × 12 × 0.75 inches and 16 oz is small standard. Larger or heavier units are large standard, bulky or extra-large.

  • Shipping weight and fulfillment fee

Within the size tier, the shipping weight sets the fulfillment fee. Small standard uses the unit weight. Every other tier uses the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight. Dimensional weight in pounds is length × width × height in inches divided by 139. On amazon.com, the fee also depends on the price band: below $10, $10 to $50, or above $50. Clothing has separate rates.

  • Storage fee

Amazon charges storage monthly by volume in cubic feet. A cubic foot of standard-size inventory costs $0.78 per month from January to September and $2.40 from October to December. Oversize inventory costs less per cubic foot. The calculator multiplies the product volume by the rate and the storage months.

  • Surcharge and peak season

Amazon adds a fuel and logistics surcharge to every FBA fulfillment fee. On amazon.com, the surcharge is 3.5% from April 17, 2026. On amazon.de, the surcharge is 1.5% from April 17, 2026 and 2% from November 2, 2026. According to Amazon's Revenue Calculator, the amazon.de surcharge applies to the Central Europe Programme rate, and the €0.26 fee for stock stored only in Germany is added without surcharge. From October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, Amazon also charges higher peak season rates for most products. The calculator picks the rate and the surcharge by the ship date, because Amazon charges the fee when the unit leaves the fulfillment center.

  • Low-Price FBA

On amazon.com, products priced below $10 get Low-Price FBA rates. On amazon.de, small and light products up to €20 including VAT get lower rates, or up to €11 in categories such as kitchen, books and beauty. The amazon.de product must be at most 35 × 25 × 12 cm and 400 g. The calculator checks these conditions for you.

Example

Worked example: a jump rope on amazon.com

The calculator above starts with this example.

  1. Price and referral fee

A jump rope in Sports and Outdoors sells for $19.99 on amazon.com. The referral fee is 15% of $19.99, or $3.00.

  2. Size tier and fulfillment fee

The packaged box measures 10 × 6 × 2 inches and weighs 0.77 lb (12.3 oz). With a 2-inch shortest side, the box is too thick for small standard and lands in the Large standard size tier. The dimensional weight is 10 × 6 × 2 ÷ 139 = 0.86 lb, or 13.81 oz. Amazon uses the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight, so the 12+ to 16 oz band applies. Outside the peak season, the fee is $4.60, and the 3.5% surcharge brings the fee to $4.76.

  3. Storage and profit

Two months of storage from January to September cost $0.11. After $5.00 product cost and $3.00 ad spend per unit, $4.12 profit remains. That is a margin of 20.6% and an ROI of 82.4%. The break-even ACOS is 35.6%.

What the calculator leaves out

Some costs depend on your account, your inventory or individual orders. These costs are not part of the result.

  • Refunds and returns

For every refund on amazon.de, Amazon keeps a refund administration fee of 20% of the referral fee, up to €5.00. On amazon.de, clothing and shoes with a high return rate also pay a returns processing fee.

  • Selling plan

The Professional selling plan costs $39.99 per month on amazon.com and €39 plus VAT per month on amazon.de.

  • Storage utilization and aged inventory

The storage utilization surcharge applies when your inventory covers more than 22 weeks of sales. New sellers are exempt for 365 days after the first shipment. The aged inventory surcharge starts after 181 days in storage on amazon.com and after 241 days on amazon.de.

  • Dangerous goods and lithium batteries

On amazon.de, products with lithium batteries and dangerous goods pay €0.10 more per unit in fulfillment fees. Dangerous goods also pay higher storage fees on both marketplaces.

  • Other fulfillment and inventory fees

Amazon charges separate fees for Pan-European FBA, cross-border fulfillment and low inventory levels.

  • Inbound placement in the US

On amazon.com, Amazon charges an inbound placement service fee unless you choose Amazon-optimized shipment splits. Enter this fee as part of your inbound cost.

  • Discounts and business orders

For coupons, Lightning Deals and Amazon Business orders on amazon.de, Amazon calculates the referral fee on the amount the buyer actually paid.

  • VAT on fees

Amazon states all amazon.de fees without VAT. Ask your tax advisor how to treat VAT on Amazon fees.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Amazon assigns every packaged unit a size tier by dimensions and weight. Within the size tier, the shipping weight sets the fee band. On amazon.com, the price band matters as well. Amazon then adds the fuel and logistics surcharge, and most fees are higher in the peak season.

  • On amazon.com, the referral fee is based on the total sales price, excluding taxes that Amazon calculates. On amazon.de, Amazon charges the referral fee on the gross price including VAT, shipping and gift wrap. In Amazon's own example, an item sells for €11.90 including 19% VAT. At a 10% rate, the referral fee is €1.19.

  • Dimensional weight is a weight Amazon derives from the package dimensions. On amazon.com, Amazon divides the volume in cubic inches by 139 to get pounds. On amazon.de, Amazon divides length × width × height in centimeters by 5,000 to get kilograms. For most size tiers, Amazon charges the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight.

  • From October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, Amazon charges higher fulfillment fees for most products. On amazon.com, a large standard item from 12 to 16 oz in the $10 to $50 band costs $4.89 instead of $4.60 before the surcharge. Storage fees also rise from October to December. In the calculator, the ship date sets the period.

  • The calculator uses Amazon's published fee tables as of the date shown. The result remains an estimate, because Amazon does not publish every rounding rule and charges by the dimensions Amazon measures. Amazon's Revenue Calculator shows binding values for your product.
